An easy read about a traditional family in India with some rather horrible practices of patriarchy. The eldest son leaves for America and becomes a doctor and his experience doing his residency and navigating America was pretty interesting. Overall events seemed a bit too simplified and the ending was sappy and a bit too optimistic but it was a quick read and I enjoyed it.

The Golden Son - Riveting and bittersweet, emotional and heartfelt.
This book kept a hold on me from the very first page. I had to finish it, now i suffer from lack of sleep well worth it.

My thoughts
The real world divided between two places was captured perfectly.
The situations and circumstances are real. I know of such.
The ties involving family are never clear and complex, loved ones lost and all that we taught we knew and understood is never what it seems.
This was the case with Anil.
Personally i felt sad when he could not end up with Leena. She had to find her own love through herself and her past.
Leena is such beautiful person, the hardships endured are beyond words yet she remains good and kind, emerging a much stronger person.
Bittersweet memories with anil and leena
I felt everything went thoroughly well up until the chapter where Geeta is barely mentioned, well for a short spell anyway. I felt cheated out of the courting of Geeta.
Or maybe I just didn't want this book to end...lol

Loved this book. About a boy passionate to become a doctor. The author captures the experiences of those who leave their traditional homes behind in search of their dreams. The parallel story about a woman caught in an arranged marriage where the in-laws are after her dowry is well presented. There were parts that made me cringe but Gowda has a deft way of addressing controversial topics. A must read for anyone wanting to understand the indian culture of placing high emphasis on academics, the reason we revere doctors and why some of the old practices of dowry simply will not go away.
Bittersweet story of a man torn between duty and his own desires when he is called upon to leave his medical residency in America and return home to India after his father's death, where he reunites with his childhood friend who is in an abusive marriage.

Gowda set the bar so high with The Shape of Family that I'm not sure anything else will surpass it. However, this was a solid book. Like her other books, a lot of the best moments are the smaller scenes in between. The plot in this book was solid, although it was sometimes hard to follow since there was so much going on. Some things dragged on a bit while others were solved without much real resolution. As always though, Gowda's characters felt so human that it was a very worthwhile read.
