I HATE the ending, cliff hangers suck! Also, none of the characters were that likeable to me, even our protagonist. It was an interesting concept but no good character development. Maybe the characters get better in the other two books but I don’t care enough to read any more from this series.
As much as I enjoyed the Caraval trilogy, I liked this even better! There are characters that cross over from Caraval, but you could read this book without reading those. That being said, I think that Jacks' storyline is a lot more interesting with the background from the previous series.
Once Upon a Broken Heart builds upon the character of Jacks, and it begins during the same time period as Finale. Evangeline asks Jacks for help to save the boy she loves from getting married to her stepsister. When things don't go as expected, Evangeline is out of commission for six weeks, and we reach the time period after the end of Finale.
This book explores a new region, The Magnificent North, with Evangeline and Jacks. The Fates are in this story as well, and we get better acquainted with some of those previously mentioned as well as others. Evangeline is an appealing heroine who is bold and adventurous and believes in magic. She is a bit naive, but that begins to change over the course of the story.
I loved the setting and characters and the mystery that is beginning to unfold. I can't wait for the next book to arrive!
