This is a gripping and honest account of the harrowing knife attack on the author and its aftermath on him (physical and psychological) and his loved ones. The attack happened just before a talk by Salman Rushdie about the importance of keeping writers safe from harm, 33.5 years after Komeini's death order against Rushdie and all those involved in the publication of The Satanic Verses.

I knew Salman Rushdie had been seriously injured. I wasn't aware of the extent of his injuries. His account of what he especially and his loved ones went through is heartbreaking and difficult to take in. It is a story of strength, hope and love.

"That Chautauqua morning I experienced both the worst and best of human nature"

"It's a story in which hatred - the knife as a metaphor of hate - is answered, and finally overcome, by love".

"I have always believed that love is a force, that in its most potent form it can move mountains. It can change the world".

"This book is that reckoning. I tell myself it's my way of taking ownership of what happened, making it mine - making it my work".

Such an extraordinary life he has lived. Not the one he would have planned for himself perhaps, but here he remains, alive and well. I found the tone somewhat, formal, maybe? I was going to say pretentious but no, I actually think it’s an authentic voice reflecting an unimaginably distorted life. He had no contact with his would-be assassin but I liked very much the section where he imagines how a conversation with him might have gone. He wrote this quite quickly after the attack and I kind of wish he’s waited a little longer as this left me feeling there is more reflecting to be done. But he wanted to reclaim his story through writing about it sooner rather than later, which is understandable. (3-stars=it was good/I liked it)
