Fascinating book sharing the author’s very personal journey of healing after a horrific, almost incomprehensible attack. At times, well into the book, he is a little preachy (ironic given that he’s expressing his opinion of how foolish any of us are who believe in God/religion) and he name drops continuously (this is lost on me since I am not sophisticated enough in my reading taste to know who he’s talking about, and therefore this can be a bit boring). The repeated expressions of eternal love for his current wife who helped save him is hard for me to reconcile with his 5 marriages. But I believe he needed to write this book as part of the healing process. And the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love are truly incredible to behold.

(Read via audiobook) this is my first Rushdie book and won’t be my last. I’m sad to say this book and his tragedy or how I discovered his works but I look forward to reading what else he has created while looking at him as a writer and not a victim.

There was much to enjoy in this book and I appreciate the details and humor. I didn’t give this 5 stars as I frankly could feel his arrogance seeping into the book with his name dropping of famous friends and many accolades; sure it’s true, but it became irritating to read about. That doesn’t take away from all this book has to offer so I would suggest to any considering it to take a look in it.
