Without reading Hamlet, there is a lot in this book to miss out on.  The references, main ideas and themes, and characters all mirror that of Hamlet since both this and Shakespeare’s book are based off of the real life story.  I like how well the author describes each situation that the characters face and I feel like that detail helps to portray the true story even more accurately.  The miniature stories within stories and the tangential bits woven throughout helped to detail each character’s relationship to Hamnet and Shakespeare.

This is such a special book. The prose is truly beautiful, it sweeps you through time and truly plants you in the moment. O’Farrell’s use of narrative is truly stunning on both an artistic and pure craft level. The section where she tracks the travel of the plague from trading ships to Judith’s hands is one of the best single chapters I’ve ever read.

I also loved the way the characters in this, while feeling completely of their time, also don’t feel alien at all. I recognise all their hopes and fears and quirks so completely. All of the character live whole lives that are absolutely believable, and O’Farrell takes the time to flesh them all out so there’s truly no one in the background.
