Took me a while to really dig into this one, but I'm glad I did. Though the beginning felt a bit rocky and dated (to be expected from something that goes back into the 1980s!), I found myself getting deeply invested in the characters, their aspirations, friendships, romantic relationships, etc. Even the annoying characters who I'd written off at different points throughout the strip (Mo, Sydney any other soap-boxy, kvetchy characters) I found myself growing to like with time.

What's most interesting about Dykes to Watch Out For is how it captures twenty-five years worth of lesbian subculture, a feat unlike anything I've ever read before. It's like watching a history unfold before your eyes. Very much like an endlessly serialized Victorian drama, but with a subversive modern lesbian twist.

Really wish this edition had wrapped with more closure. The last strip was really just like any other regular strip, so I'll have to prowl the depths of the internet to see if Alison Bechdel resolved any of the loose ends.

Reading this book made me realize that our struggles are not new! Both contemporary interpersonal challenges within the queer community (ethical non-monogamy? Is marriage and having children assimilation? How do you exist in a community with so many exes? etc) and bigger political struggles (constant war, corporate greed and consolidation, wealth inequality) are things that have been going on for decades. I loved the sense of hope within community in the midst of chaos and times of political crisis that the first 3/4 of the book left me with. It was quite inspiring to read how queer folks find joy in each other even during broader moments of societal strife. From the events of 9/11 on, though, the comics got increasingly chaotic and the personal lives of the characters all got pretty bleak along with the political losses, which I wish was more balanced.

this was july’s book club book. and i really, really, really dislike graphic novels/comics. so right off the bat, this was gonna be tough and was.

i love the themes these comics explore and the glimpse into lgbtq history is valuable and interesting and that part i enjoyed.

however. i found mo to be annoying, which is tough. i found myself only really reading the dialogue and not really looking at the pictures. so really the format isn’t for me and some characters were annoying. so despite the great themes and depiction of queer life from the 70s-00s, i couldn’t really enjoy this.
