A sad gripping story of a woman’s descent into madness after abandonment. Sometimes you lose yourself in making others happy and think that is the meaning of your life and when that all disappears there is nothing to hold on to. This story showed how to climb back from that void not to start anew but to accept reality.

I have mixed feelings for this book, mostly because Olga is a narrator I both liked and wanted to punch in the face.
On one side, I understand her pain, her frustration. On the other side, I feel like she is a horrible mother, who only thinks about herself and cannot see past her own vanity. Still, her pain and confusion are palpable through the pages and, in the end, I was on her side and wanted her to look in her ex's eyes and say "suck it, I'm better without you".
It is a quick read, although I do not understand why it took me so long to read it. Sadly, I don't know if I will read anything else from Ferrante.

Reading this book felt like reading The Bell Jar. You’re witnessing a woman’s descent into madness in such a subtle way you don’t even realize how bad things are until she does. The writing is very beautiful, insightful, made me look at my own experiences with abandonment with a different perspective. Looking forward to reading more of Ferrante’s work!!
the babadook (2014)
edit to say this was definitely one of my most hated books of the year, but it was also undeniably good. but let me tell you it is NOT fun watching this woman go crazy in her apartment. 150 pages of pain lol
