Warnings: physical violence, dismemberment, allusions to torture, body horror, gore, cannibalism

I'll start the review with the one thing that was fixed in Tooru's arc - when he attacks Kaneki, he talks about how he felt betrayed by him leaving the Quinxes, and you know what, that reason would have been perfectly acceptable for him to go on a murderous rampage against Kaneki. He was like an older brother to the Quinxes and there was genuine affection there, even though he wasn't the same person. So wasting THAT with a half-baked repeated trope of Tooru being in love with Kaneki as being the reason for him going on that rampage seems pretty pointless, when there was a perfectly legit reason right there! Meanwhile, Yonebashi and Urie are starting to feel deeply unsatisfied with the CCG's path under that idiot's leadership, and so is Suzuya dreaming of a world where ghouls and humans can co-exist.

The ghouls, meanwhile, are looking for refuge in Ward 24, the site of its own legend of a One-Eyed Ghoul. With the CCG ramping up efforts to eradicate the existence of regular ghouls, the latter are in a difficult place as their food supplies are running low and hunting corpses isn't as easy now. Tooru taking in Touka's friend for aiding a ghoul is a direct play at setting a trap for Kaneki, and it is something that made my heart afraid. But then again, this volume is more of a holding place, to reaffirm relationships and develop on them, rather than have major plot changes. One big relationship change was of course, Touka and Kaneki, though it seemed both rushed and a long time coming. (Also, Kaneki being nervous about touching a boob was such a callback to the innocent one from way back) Then, Touka has a decision to make, and Kaneki has something new and more personal to fight for. And finally, the highlight of the book was the two weddings and how similar and different they were! (I still have my eyebrow raised at what the jewellery worn was made of, though)

Overall, I think this volume has a bit of my interest back, though I am still cringing from afar at Tooru's whole disastrous arc.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.

Some weird things happened in this one...

wtf this is soooo good

Strong beginning and plot-twisty ending, but some of the middle chapters were a bit boring, it's a transition volume in between different arcs so I'm hoping for future action to come. To be fair, this volume has several key scenes and turning points for many characters.

One more thing, the reason why Yonebashi is on the cover might be in the chapter 132 and if I'm right, this is literally the best. I'm so ready for this to happen!

My chapter by chapter spoilery thoughts:

ch 122

It felt like a filler volume, backstories I don't care much about. There were some interesting scenes but overall I didn't like vol. 12.

have i read three volumes of this series in one day? yes i have, mind your own business

I can't wait to finish the manga so I can watch the anime, if it is anywhere close to how good this was I know I am going to enjoy it.

One thing that I struggle with when reading manga and comics is connecting with the main character because they aren't typically very relatable in my opinion. However, I didn't struggle with that when reading this which was a nice change.

While this book does deal with zombies (Walking dead is back on and I am in a Halloween mood still) I find that this does have an interesting take and it reminds me a bit of The Girl with all the Gifts as they are a bit more intelligent than you typically see.

One of my favorite things about this book is how Ishida connects his book to one of my favorite classics The Metamorphosis by Kafka. The way that both of the main characters change into something completely new is awesome.

This was going to be 3.5 stars until the last 10 pages. I really enjoyed the story and the art style, but the character development was quite slow. The middle chapters were a bit repetitive, as the protagonist resists rather than struggles with his new-found status as a ghoul.

The ghoul culture/society and how the world is set up is really interesting, and though the characters are a bit bland the last few pages set things up for some more interesting developments.

If I can find the rest of this series at the library I will definitely consider reading more.
