So... Touka and Kaneki's relationship advances way too quickly for me here. In one volume, we get . What the hell! They've literally been apart for 90% of the time they've known each other because Kaneki is a self-martyring idiot. I realise it may sound ridiculous to be complaining that a romance isn't slow-burn enough when it's arguably been happening for 25 volumes, but I really feel like they don't know each other well enough. Their personalities have both changed a lot since the last time they interacted at length.
As far as I'm concerned, this constitutes a substantial weakness in this volume. Upon Kaneki's love for Touka rests a lot of the emotional weight of his reaffirmed decision to live, despite all the people he's lost and. I kind of wish the choice had remained tied mainly to Hide as in volume 7...
I get where Mutsuki’s obsession with Kaneki fits into the story as a whole. Someone at the CCG needs to be especially motivated to hunt him down. It’s also an echo of the cycle where Tokage tortured Yamori who tortured Kaneki (sadism being "passed on"). Similarly, Torso obsessed over Mutsuki who obsessed over Sasaki (obsession being "passed on"). It's part of the way love and pain are intertwined in the world of Tokyo Ghoul, which means it's part of why I like the series. But dear god, does it feel like a waste of a character. Mutsuki started out as a trans man who needed to gain confidence and found it in his mentor and squad, and then he became a psychopath who experiences blackouts and stalks said mentor so he can kill him out of love. Taken in light of the other queer and queer-coded characters being antagonists and all pretty much irredeemable except for Tsukiyama, it's not a great track record.
The foreshadowing about is delicious but also fills me with dread.
Lastly: Urie and Yonebayashi’s friendship is so precious.

Okay I did not expect Touka to be pregnant.
ALSO KANEKI AGING FAST - this makes me so sad bc I don’t think he’s going to resort to cannibalism again. I think he’s going to die in the final battle but the world is going to be left like he wanted it to be with his child growing up in it.
Ugh

This was a good build up volume and building up stakes especially for Kenaki.
