Excellent police procedural.  Not hard to see why this is a successful long running series!

I won't lie, I'm surprised that Rizzoli made book 2 in the series.

In this book Jane Rizzoli is the only woman on the Boston Murder Squad. Women start to go missing, and have organs removed, when found. This violence naturally places a lot of pressure on the Boston police to solve the case. This pressure is ratcheted up, as more and more women go missing.

As the book progresses, we follow the lives of the police squad investigating the case. We especially follow the lives of Jane Rizzoli, and the 2 policemen that she is closest to professionally, as their lives unravel, as the pressure from the investigation mounts. The result was that Rizzoli doesn’t come off looking particularly good, which isn't great, given we're supposed to be rooting for her.

In addition, Rizzoli isn’t the main focus of long periods of the book, and Isles isn’t mentioned at all, which is strange, given that this is presented as the first “Rizzoli and Isles” book. I can only assume focus groups reported something along the lines of “Oh your main character is a bit of a prude, but Rizzoli is interesting if you change her character completely, and make her less angry.”

All in all, I didn't particularly enjoy the book. Too many of the main characters do things I don't approve of.

A good thriller. Couldn't read it at night before bed, or else it would get in my head. It was neat to read the origination/inspiration of the Rizzolli and Isles TV series

Esse livro é incrível. A autora escolheu fazer o básico muito bem feito: uma boa ideia, personagens bem desenvolvidos e uma narrativa envolvente que deixa o leitor obcecado por cada vez mais.

a good mystery book - but the gender essentialism and constant victim complex would do better staying in 2005

I read this book after being introduced to The Bone Garden by the same author. While this book is stunningly detailed and the hunt for the murderer is very heart-pounding, personally I prefer her historical mysteries.
