Mixed feelings about this one. The confrontations littered though this novel all felt like some type of fantasy one thinks about in the shower but would never confess to another. They don't really hit as much as they probably did in Stephen's mind. Stephen's over descriptive writing was almost overbearing in this one. There were times I liked the book and other times I utterly despised it.

There was an offhand comment that annoyed me. "They looked at me like they were trying to see how much hair grew on my asshole and whether they could scalp it." In relation to a group of native americans. Definitely could tell this was written in the 1970's.

This book needed a good cleaning. The arrangement of the flashbacks in this novel confused me. Some of them felt unneeded and the tension would have helped if they were more strictly tied to the events happening with the hostages being held in the classroom.

This book didn't make me feel anything. That's the worst thing about it.

the main character is insufferable who complains about everything in a facade to be deep and intelligent. he thinks he’s better than everyone and he justifies the bad things he does because of his rough family. while i don’t mind flawed main characters, it feels like his character development went no where.

the way that the girls were described and written about  was awful. they were barely developed as characters and overly sexualised for no reason. i know the protagonist is a teenage boy but the writing screams ‘just another male author who doesn’t know how to write female characters properly’.

the way that the teenage characters acted and talked seemed unrealistic to how they would actually behave in a hostage situation. it’s so jarring reading how they so quickly fall for the protagonist’s charm and root for him when there’s no evidence why they should.
