What an interesting concept!  I'd started this book on a flight home from France, so I think the circumstances really gripped me because of a semi-shared experience.  I was also drawn to the book-within-a-book concept, but felt that arch of the story was under-developed.

That said, the book really lost me in the second half. It felt too disjointed and clobbered together.  As well, and perhaps this was due to the translation and/or cultural norms I'm not aware of in France, I was unsettled by the authors characterization of race and sexual relationships, descriptions for which felt forced and unnecessary.

What's fascinating is the number of people who cannot classify this book - even on TheStoryGraph.  Not quite science fiction, not quite literary, not quite philosophy. I guess that's a sign of an interesting piece of work.

I love the premise of this book and wished more time was spent getting into the interpersonal dynamics of the passengers. This is a book that left a strong impression based on the overall theme/vibe that is quite up for interpretation. It was a lively discussion for bookclub.
