At the beginning of 'The Anomaly', I thought this was a strong contender towards one of the best books I've read recently. I love feeling lost, like I don't know what's going on, like I'm trying to piece everything together hopelessly. But soon enough, as we get into the core of the story, the rhythm accelerates, and what results is a pacing I would have liked to be more balanced, with less focus on the introductory scenes, and more development in the later stages.
You actually only find out what the topic is about 1/3 into the book, so I will not reveal it.
We follow a myriad of characters after they have experienced an extreme amount of turbulence on a flight from Paris to New York. At different ages and spread around the world, they are, for example, a Nigerian singer, a young girl and her pet frog, an actress at the beginning of her theatre career and an author who writes his chef d'oeuvre, 'The Anomaly'. They will come together in the exploration of this phenomenon that has every chance to shake up the world and what we perceive as the natural laws of physics.
A lot of reviewers complained about their being too many perspectives, and generally it's also a gripe I have. But here all of them were interesting and unique, they all had their own voice and were straight-forward to distinguish. I particularly liked the researchers for the thought-provoking conversations and really pushing what others might be willing to believe, where their limits are.
The mystery is just so cool, I've never read of anything like it. And the reason why I would have liked the plot to be split more evenly across the sections is because there is a conversation about the public response about it, with people's reactions often being linked to aspects of faith, ethics and morals. That would have been fascinating to find out more about, especially because what Hervé Le Tellier included was already unexpected. The new characters who appear as part of the reveal's aftermath make perfect sense, but I never saw them coming.
I'd recommend it, just know this requires a suspension of disbelief and being satisfied with not having all the answers.

part-thriller, part-metaphysics, part-critique on America. the metaphysics was done well and I enjoyed the concept of each of the characters and their double lives. the story would have moved at a better pace with fewer characters, some of whose resolutions were uninteresting. awkward descriptions at some points made me wonder if the writing was more graceful in French. read it on a plane! ha

I really enjoyed this book and will read it again, as it seems clear that vital details will come into focus now that I know how the story will end. For what it's worth, I'm also not sure I understand the ending, although I would put some money on my opinion. Anyway, an airplane flying into NYC from Europe emerges from a freak storm to a flood of baffling questions. The plane is escorted to a remote military hangar, and the passengers are, in effect, in custody. Before this happens, we are introduced to a number of apparently unrelated characters; it is worth paying a lot of attention to what you learn about them.

Honestly, if it wasn't for this being a book club book I would have DNF'd it at around 30%. The first part was HARD to get through.
That all being said, I am so glad I finished the book.
I think I passed the stimulation.

No sé si m'explico.
He acabat una mica decebut, la veritat. Esperava acabar més content, del llibre.
