Devastatingly beautiful. This felt like confronting the loneliness you feel when in a crowded place. Calligarich takes us on a melancholic and tender— at times also brutal — romp through Rome with our alcoholic protagonist Leo. The people are frivolous, the sun too strong and the abyss is never ending. This would be perfect to read at the end of summer.

self-destructive european man meets a self-destructive manic pixie dream girl and spends a self-destructive summer in europe. some truly gorgeous lines in there but character development (particularly of the women) wasn’t quite enough. the foreword really enriches the book. also appreciate the strong love of the ocean.
