DID NOT FINISH: 51%

just didn’t grab me. The story was aimless and all the female characters were treated as hysterical on some level or another. Maybe I’ll come back to it, who knows

Boring, uninspired story of an asshole and empty character. Nothing drives him to do anything. His response to everything is “i guess”. Everything in the story is left up in the air. It seems like nothing is decided and the story jumps from half conversation with people we barely know or remember. The way the author writes about women makes be cringe. Her breasts don’t have their own consciousness. Stop pretending you add anything to the story by saying her boobs looked happy or whatever.

Also istg if the author used “at the end of my tether” once more, i’m going to scream

Some hilarious dialogue at the start of the book. No real plot, just vibes.

After finishing the book, I contemplated it for 10 minutes then immediately started again from the beginning. I have never done this before.

Calligarich sits in the center of a Venn diagram that features the best parts of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Salinger and - above all - Alfred Hayes. But being Italian, the writing, themes and characters feel fresh, so full marks to the translator Howard Curtis (Shame on Picador for not including his name on the
front cover).

A Stunning novel that cements its place in my all time favourites. HOLY FUCK.

Moody, very Italian film noir-ish.
