L'Adieu aux armes

My first Hemingway novel. I loved the narration and prose - felt like I was there while these characters were in the thick of WW1 hell.

Crushed by the ending though: it was the right call but I’m still processing it.

I expected the laconic prose, the matter-of-fact narrative voice, but I didn't expect the humour and the depth of feeling.

The fact Hemmingway's style manages to be 'simple' and transparent and yet end up moving you so much is testament to his brilliant writing.

Definitely an author I want to read more of!

A good example of an author and book which heavily impacted literature after them, but don’t feel so revolutionary to a modern reader.

Story is very engaging, even if understated, psychology and main concerns of the characters were interesting and kind of surprising. I liked how it wasn’t too allegorical as an anti war book, more honest, realistic and story focused.

Glad I read it but not an all time favorite. I really enjoy Hemingway’s style of writing and want to read more of his fiction.

Well that ending crushed me. It takes a while to get into this one but I read the last ~120 pages in one night. I'll definitely check out more Hemingway.

Sun also rises > farewell to arms … just read some Steinbeck.

I simply do not care for Hemingway's writing style. It comes across stilted to me. The characters are not likable in any way and I just feel icky when I am done with the story.
