What a crude and nasty little book.

I appreciated the gore and the disgusting little bits every now and then, but overall it was a bit underwhelming. The writing was extremely annoying and got purple-prosy more often than not. I didn't find myself rooting for any of the stereotyped characters. So much potential though—it was a great concept, but the execution fell flat for me.

Was not expecting this to be a book that got me so invested that I read essays/analyses about it afterwards and have been brainstorming some theories of my own, but here we are! I knew the gore was going to be insane going into this and it WAS (

Tim Riggs is a well-respected troop leader and small town doctor. He takes his troop to a remote island with no inhabitants other than the wildlife that surrounds the cabin. Kent, Ephraim, Max, Shelley, and Newton believe it to be just like any other adventure in the wilderness, when a terrifying man approaches the cabin. Tim, the reluctant but ready to help doctor, rushes to get the man some help. This man has lost so much weight that he is practically skeletal, but he cannot satiate his hunger. Very quickly, things go south for Tim and the boys, as they figure out what is causing the hunger of the new stranger.

Nick Cutter has solidified himself as a king of scientific horror. I read The Deep last year, and really loved the way he used science and the unknown to create a horrific, yet plausible story. The Troop brings that same energy, but the writing enveloped me so quickly, that it was hard to put down. I'm a huge fan of body horror, and The Troop does not disappoint. I found myself gagging, which I never do, and needing to take deep breaths before continuing on some specific chapters. I can't wait to see what else Cutter has in store for me with his other books.
