A book club read. Gross so gross. Absolutely wrenching reading about the body horror in this. These are all positive qualities tho, don't get it twisted.

I read this book right as I found that my cat had tapeworms, which elevated the nauseating body-horror of the worm-centered book to an upsetting, lingering sort of unease.

Scary and captivating. A classic gory horror

Did you ever go to summer camp growing up?Ever sat around the campfire or in your cabin after hours swapping scary stories with other campers? Did these stories include something ominous about the very location of the camp itself? Perhaps a dangerous fugitive recently escaped from a prison or psychiatric hospital; maybe something grisly happened there decades ago and a ghost is out for revenge; or maybe something less than human is out to get the unwitting campers. Nick Cutter’s The Troop expertly captures all of these elements in this story about a Boy Scout troop trying to earn a few merit badges on a secluded island in northeastern Canada.

The book takes clear inspiration from works like “Lord of the Flies”, “The Thing”, and even “The Shining”. A clever plot device used throughout is that chapters which follow the chronological order of events often end with a jump ahead to the future where an item from the chapter is cataloged as evidence or notes or the transcripts from court proceedings reveal new details. This choice increases the sense of dread throughout reminding readers again and again that things can’t end well for any of the boys on this island.

SOOOO SO GOOD! It would be a 5/5 but there were some things that bothered me a bit, but that's ok. I enjoyed most of it! (That ending though... SO GOOD! I won't spoil it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.)

I can't wait to read another Nick Cutter book!
