Feels a little like Lord of the Flies. Could've done without the animal torture.
This book was truly horrific. I read it in 24 hours and have never been so uncomfortable and disgusted reading a novel, which is what made this so perfect and made me unable to put it down. When I tried to describe this book, the only word I could think of was visceral. It's physically and emotionally visceral. It's Lord of the Flies meets The Hot Zone, with all the fucked up gore of an Eli Roth film. It's a coming of age tale in the most awful way.
It's not for the squeamish or easily disturbed, for sure.

Wooooooow, this book was sooo gross, but sooo good at the same time. Made my stomach turn and feel deeply uncomfortable multiple times.

This might be one of the creepiest and grossest books I’ve read (and I’ve read The Groomer by Jon Athan). I really enjoyed it though despite being so creeped out. I loved the camping setting and the eerie feeling that accompanied it. It was perfect for a fall read. The characters were enjoyable to learn about along the way. I was even shocked a few times from them. Overall, it’s a great fall read that will have you crawling in your skin.
Alright, look... the body horror, plot, and content in general? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ In the most disgusting way possible. Some of the WORST body horror I have forced myself through. The "contagion" got to me man... "They" really fucking did.
wow. This took me a while to get through but I am so glad I persevered. The descriptive writing and storytelling was just amazing.
I’m not someone who gets put off food easily but I genuinely couldn’t read this whilst I was trying to eat or drink as it made me feel physically unwell. Never has a book given me such a visceral reaction like that.
I wouldn’t say it ever scared me but it definitely gave me the heeby jeebies!!
I loved how the book was broken up and we were given transcripts etc that did some of the world building and gave us the explanations we needed without it all coming from the boys (which wouldn’t have been possible anyway)
The last book I read was Wilder Girls which is a YA version of this I would say with a lot less information on the contagion. I started The Troop in January and just couldn’t get into it, it didn’t hook me but after reading Wilder Girls, I felt like it was a good time to jump back into this and I’m glad I did!!
4 star read as it didn’t hook me initially but once it did, I couldn’t put it down!
