4.25
Leaning towards 4.25/4.5 for this one. Only 12% of classical musicians are people of color. Less than two percent are black. A startlingly fact I felt saddened to find out while reading @brendanslocumb ‘s debut novel. The readers get to know Ray and how he came to possess a ten million dollar violin, quietly but quickly becoming a sought after musician the more he practices and performs. Yet, his precious instrument gets stolen a mere couple of weeks before he is set to perform in classical music’s largest global competition know to mankind. Who dunnit? While I wasn’t surprised by Nicole(it’s always the partner/wife/husband lol being the culprit, I did like that the author gave us some red herrings to throw us off. I truly enjoyed getting to know Ray and understanding the backstory behind how classical music became his biggest passion. In spite of the family he was born into, Grandma Nora never gave up on him. I love that the author brought his own background and music knowledge to life because you can tell he knows his material. I personally would recommend this not just for fans of classical music but also to those looking to broaden & diversify their mystery palette. It’s definitely a character driven novel but in order to figure out the importance of the violin, it was essential for the author to gives us the backstory.
