While I did really enjoy this book, especially the portions I listened to (full cast audiobook production was super neat!), the overall story just fell a bit flat for me. It was a unique story and reminded me of None of This is True by Lisa Jewell, but it felt pretty slow at times despite the different writing styles mixed in. I also didn’t really care for any of the characters, which I know isn’t the goal of most mystery/thriller books. There was a theme of abuse that was among quite a few of characters that I didn’t care for and was hard to read, especially because it came through in many aspects of the story- I knew that was a part of the story but it didn’t come into play until about 40% and I already felt hooked into the story. I get the characters are supposed to be morally gray, but it felt like there weren’t any characters I could really root for in the story.

Listen for the Lie is a fast-paced thriller with short chapters, unreliable characters, and lots of drama! I was pulled in from the first few sentences, and I really enjoyed the audiobook narration of the podcast element. I was suspicious of basically everyone, so it really could have been anyone - leaving me with a lackluster reveal at the end. However, I was here for the dark humor and drama during the first half of this story. Let's just say Grandma's birthday party was the icing on the cake! Lucy was an interesting character to follow, seeing as she is suspected to have murdered her best friend - did I mention she also thinks of different ways she can kill people? I had so many theories about what was going on, most of which I thought were better crafted than what was actually going on. I did lose a little interest in the second half of the book, and I also felt that people's motives weren't deep enough for my preferences. I'm a fan of "villain backstories" and uncovering what makes people the way they are and drives their motives - this was lacking in that department for me. Overall, I enjoyed this one, but I will say it was probably just an average thriller that had an exceptional audiobook!

I was hooked from the first pages. I fell asleep reading and picked it back up in the morning.  I loved Ben’s cocky but sweet smugness. Lucy’s sarcastic comments during awkward situations were hilarious. I loved her grandmother’s personality even more. I’ve never laughed so much while reading a thriller like I did while reading Lucy & the grandmother’s interactions with other people. I would love to see a series come from this with Ben’s podcasts solving other cold cases (but not without Lucy and her grandmother of course 😏)

With the unreliable narrator and excellent storytelling, I raced through this novel.  The author kept me engaged with the twists, and I didn't realize the ending until she told me.   I bet this would be great on audio, too.

Can’t remember the last time I finished a book in two days (there were many other things I should have been doing but I couldn’t stop reading - the greatest feeling!) or sobbed (not cried, sobbed) over a book. Definitely read but make sure you have a block of free time.
