this book attempted to tackle too many topics in to few pages. the end result is that none of them were strongly developed and the book turned into a snoozer.
Probably one of the best WWII novels I've ever read. It is amazing how Janet captured the tension, the euphoria, and the mixture of emotions happening in America.
I enjoyed that this book educated me on a part of history I knew nothing about. However, the story itself was a bit light, following the lives of June and Sam and several other people in the town. This book did inspire me to find other non-fiction books about Oak Ridge, the town that was developed simply to help scientists develop the atomic bomb.
Good traveling reading on an interesting and difficult subject but overall I was disappointed. The author focused on too many characters so that none of them was really fleshed out. The title referred to the girls in the story, but two of the points of view were men. They didn't live for me, they were cardboard. Some big occurrences happened offstage, like what happened with Ralph. It just didn't hang together.
I'd have appreciated more of the historical side, much more discussion of the ethics of what was going on at Oak Ridge, rather than the romantic stuff. The only relationship that rang true was that of Joe and Moriah.

The first quarter or so went by fairly quickly as I was eager to learn more about the characters and the setting. It all seemed a bit too shallow in descriptions even from the start, but I thought that we'd get to dig deeper as the story went on. Nope, just surface level story TELLING, not showing.
The book as a whole seemed to drag on and I felt like I forced myself to finish. Such a shame too because this is one part of WWII that I haven't read much about and really would've liked to have been immersed in the setting.

An epitome of a key historical period is told in a touch story of June and other characters. The author picked a very unique prospective to describe some unsuccessful love stories, people's life in a small town, stress, and racial discrimination during that time period. The book is very well written and the audio book is a plus with such a vivid narration. I really enjoyed it.
If it wasn't for a challenge, I would have pulled the bookmark on this one. Not much history (for me) to learn, the book was more of a chick-lit than historical fiction.
2.5. Very simplistic writing. Touches on a little known piece of history, but very simple story.
