I did not like any of the characters very much. I thought this would be great but really it was ok

Overall, an engaging story with plenty of personal drama and with an interesting thread of dark, gritty, reality. The historical aspects are broadly accurate, with a decent understanding of the era but an overall better understanding and treatment of the ongoing legacy of that era.

This book left me with ?. Felt like there’s no continuity it felt boxed. I mean you had the story of Joe with the black community then June, Sam, Tom and Cici with the occasional other characters. It wasn’t fast paced it was so slow. This book was read for my quarterly postal group!

Not so much about that time period but rather the relationships created at the Oak Ridge, TN station

I clearly remember buying this book at a cute little bookstore here in CT. It sat on my shelf for the last few years because other books always caught my eye just a bit more. I decided to try to tackle some backlist books this month as a sort of a mini “clear my shelves” challenge. I knew it was the right time to finally pick up this book.

I had read some mixed reviews prior to digging in to this story. I was intrigued by the premise and was curious to see where I would fall on the enjoyment scale. I found this book incredibly readable. I flew through it thanks to the shorter chapters and the revolving points of view. I loved the inclusion of photographs from the time period. It really helped me to picture the scenes depicted.

The plot was just above average for me. I feel like there were missed opportunities to really create memorable characters. The word “girls” in the title made me believe that this would focus more on the women who found themselves doing a tedious job but who also didn’t know the details of what they were helping to create. I would love to read another book about this that goes a bit more into the specifics while also showcasing the personal relationships between the women who lived/worked in such a unique situation.

3.75 rounded up. I agree with the other reviews that say there wasn’t much story or plot, but it was still interesting enough from a historical perspective to hold my attention.

It was promising but a lot of the dialogue seemed juvenile and turned Into a book more about relationships than the atomic city. It just fell flat to me.
