It is with regret that I type this review and state that there is honestly just something lacking in this book. I can't pinpoint exactly what it is but I have a strong feeling that it just has to do with whole plot. The book itself lacks depth and development of both the storyline and the characters. Although there isn't as much interaction between Kayli and the boys than that of previous books (or that of the Ghost Bird series), I do like the fact that Stone has given most of the book up to Kayli and we have seen her make choices and become her own person. Don't get me wrong, there are still aspects to Kayli which need maturing but she has grown from the girl we first met in Thief. I honestly feel like I'm only reading these books because they're Academy related and overall I haven't felt very into this series that much (perhaps because its just not on par with the Ghost Bird series which I adore). I really wanted more interaction with the boys but alas Blake will have to suffice for now (I genuinely DO like Blake and I hope he's in the series till the end). I just feel frustrated that I can't engage with the Scarab Beetle books more. I think I'm gonna re-read them all soon because there is something wrong here lool. Anyway enough of the depressing stuff! The action in this book was great particularly towards the second half/the end of the book. Alice p'd me off so much ffs she was so irritating and like no offence Ethan but how could you marry someone you only knew for 2 months?? the heck.. (LOOOL at Raven claiming some Russian's lit get married the day after meeting someone.. i love him so much tbh). I felt SO bad for Brandon he's literally the most loyal brother ever I absolutely adore his relationship with Corey and how they're both willing to do anything for each other. I really enjoyed the side-characters Stone brought in in this book esp Avery and Doyle. I hope we see more of them (read: Avery) in the coming books. So yeah I don't think I'll like this series quite as much as I do the Ghost Bird series but we'll see what happens!
The overarching storyline moves along slightly in this one, but the romance is totally stagnant. The previous books have way more relationship development and then this one is 2 steps back. The Academy series already has a super slow plot development (which I really don’t mind), but starting to go in reverse is a little bit off for me. In fact a lot of the main characters of the series weren’t really present in this one, and they were never together as a full group at any point in time. I really felt the loss of that group dynamic and sense of bonding between the team.
It’s also a little disappointing that it’s starting to feel like Kayli is being duplicitous in her relationships with the guys. She’s portrayed as more mature than Sang, yet I never felt like Sang was being dishonest or misleading in her feelings. How embarrassing that a 16 year old with way more baggage is able to navigate the academy and an all dog team with way more composure and grace... I wish Kayli would nut up and starting talking to AT LEAST one of the guys. I guess I can’t really complain though because it’s only book 3 and by book 5 in GB they’re still hand over the hand 🤷🏻♀️😂

Love this story Kayli adventure in trying to save the people she loves and what she does in order to help them
ok so i started off reading her other series first then i started reading this series. the first book had me hooked. then i started the second book and it took me a while to get into it. this is book 3 in the series and i was nervous to read this book. I started reading this book and it had action from the beginning but in the middle it started to fade off. i did not want to give up on the story because i wanted to know what happened. i like how she keeps building the relationships of her characters. the main character is making me frustrated that she won't trust the boys but i understand that she wants to be on her own. C.L. always leaves you wanting more. overall it was a good book but i am not sure i will read the next book in the series.
This book was disappointing for me. Kaylie is still indecisive about all her feelings for and about the guys. I just really want to see her actually get to know the guys more instead of just kissing them and being so confused. Don't get me wrong, I love all the steamy moments but I wish that she would actually talk to them more and find out more about them.
Which brings me to my main pet peeve about Kaylie. The guys are always helping her out and she risked a lot to save them, but why is still not trusting them and second-guessing them?
Oh well, let's move on to the next book.

C. L. Stone is a master storyteller and I wish The Academy was real. I highly recommend you give this series and her Ghost Bird series a try.
Crazy intense
Things pick up a lot in this book and get intense. Kidnapping and trackers....it is very covert spy. Things get more deep with the guys. Kayli is feeling overwhelmed and wanting to run again.
