I was a little wary when starting this book because ghosts scare me a little bit
I’m not the right target audience for this story.
The writing and characters are interesting.

Shore has strong descriptive writing and writes distinct characters who are easy to love---this made it easy to sit down and read from start to finish.
But it's 50-100 pages too long. There are excess characters, descriptions, and plot threads that drag down the pacing and confused my attention. Sometimes this made for a delightful chaos---other times, it was just chaos. Ezra's continual need to find fault with himself and take on more than he can handle often slipped into pure martyrdom and victim complex, which made him a frustrating main character. Often, interesting plot tensions would be introduced and then solved with unsatisfying ribbon tie---no character is ever too mad, there is always money somewhere, always several hands willing to help if only they're asked. This combined overstuffed prose and unsatisfying plot resolutions had me skimming more than I'd like.
But Shore does have a lot of obvious talent. Despite my frustrations above, I never wanted to abandon the book and I'm glad I finished it. Shore should be proud of their debut novel, and I hope they continue to hone their craft.

Loved the queer Jewish rep in this. Ezra is a mess.

This book is a whole lot. Very melodramatic in its execution. It reminds me of a bunch of other media properties in a mixed up jumble… a Jewish Sort Of, Taharah, and The Only Purple House in Town. After sitting with it for a day, I’ve decided that i did like it quite a lot, and will recommend it to some folks, but i probably don’t need to reread it again any time soon, y’know?
