World After

I liked World After a lot. I think a bit more than Angelfall, because there was no heavy focus on the romance, allowing for more focus on other characters. I enjoy how gruesome Susan Ee can make her scenes. She really makes her world appear as terrifying as it might be if it were reality. I appreciate that-- it is something a lot of YA fantasy novels lack.

Loved the first one. Didn’t like how much more gore. Also didn’t like that they were separated for 70% of the book

I love this series! I was quite frustrated when Raffe didn't show up for 100+ pages, but I guess absence really does make the heart grow fonder

3.5 stars

What I loved: the mood and setting, Penryn and Raffe (squee!), Paige's story, and Mom.

What left me wanting: the lack of plot movement. Yeah, a bunch of stuff happened, but a lot of it felt like filler. Highly readable, interesting, beautifully crafted filler, but it still felt like filler.

Verdict: suffers from dreaded Second Book Syndrome, but Ee's skills as an author make the offense far more enjoyable than most others.
fast-paced

Even more insane and effed up (in a good, scary way) than the first one. Geez Louise. I just don't even know where this is headed after that ending. :-o :D O_O!!

slow-paced

Well, that was disappointing. After a promising start with Angelfall, book 2 took a massive turn for the worse. World After is definitely not the strong follow-up that book 1 implied was coming. I feel lied to!

Nothing really happened in this sequel. The plot moves slower than a fucking snail—actually, it wasn't even moving forward, just repeating elements from book 1 with minimal progression. The worst offense? We don't even get Raffe until the last 20% of the book. For a series where the angel-human dynamic is the most compelling element, this felt like a massive misstep.

Character development took a serious hit too. Any chance of profoundness or genuine emotional struggle just ends up feeling shallow. The internal conflicts that had potential in book one never deepen or evolve in meaningful ways. Instead, we get repetitive scenarios that don't push the characters or story forward.

And naming the sword “Pookie Bear”? Seriously? 🙄 Cringe-worthy moment.

The only thing that possibly redeemed this book was Raffe’s emotional reaction to seeing Penryn.. and pretty much the last 50 pages, which finally delivered some momentum. It makes me genuinely sad because I really wanted to love this series after that intriguing first installment!

I think maybe if I was younger, I'd have different opinions about this book. YA has its place, but this reinforced why I typically avoid novels centered on 17-year-olds. I'm on the fence about whether to DNF the series at this point... but I do know I won't be picking up another YA book with a teenage protagonist anytime soon.
