I really enjoyed my first ever book by Ann Cleeves. She is a well known author who created the characters from the "Vera" and "Shetland" TV series. This book is the first in the Inspector Ramsay series. My knowledge of English geography is very poor, but I think this is set in the north of England. The very unpopular principal of a small village school has been found dead - hanged at a Halloween party. Inspector Ramsay soon discovers that he has been murdered. The obvious suspect is his wife, Kitty, who is soon arrested. Jack Robson, the caretaker of the school is convinced that Kitty could not have killed Harold, so takes it upon himself to investigate. I enjoyed getting to know the characters in the village and look forward to getting to know Inspector Ramsay better in further books in this series.

My introduction to Ms Cleeves in book format. Watched Shetland and Vera and learned that both were based on books my Ann Cleeves. I had forgotten how much I like reading murder mysteries. Although I found jumping from one point of view to another without warning a bit confusing it didn't take away from my enjoyment and what a surprise at the end! I never suspected it. Yes, I will continue reading her books.

This was an easy read, but I'm not sure I'd want to continue with the series. Usually, the main character is these sort of books (the inspector/detective etc) are the centre of the story, and they sort of drive the plot forward.  In this case, the inspector (and subsequent main character of the other books in the series), was rather peripheral to the plot and had no impact really in what happens.
