I think that T.C. Boyle poses some difficult and unthought of situations with a protagonist who is deaf, especially when Dana is pulled over at the beginning of the novel (which starts the entire conflict so you aren't having anything spoiled). That was enough to keep me intrigued for the first 40% of the novel until I realized that this cross-country chase was starting to get Looney Tunes levels of ridiculous. Also, the end of the novel...what? Seriously, when Bridger builds the wall up, I did too. All of that for "nothing?" Get out of here. Then the quaint little editing scene at the end? Again, cartoon levels of ridiculousness.

Read it a long time ago. Don't remember, but I must have liked it as I put it on the shelf. Pulling to give to John Martin.

I don't love all of T.C Boyle's book, but I always like them. A novelist of great range, Boyle keeps me engaged.

i will give tc boyle credit for writing things that don't just read as dressed up autobiographical sketches. so the thing about this book is that is about a deaf character & identity theft but doesn't seem to have much to say about communication/sound/language/identity. it is good thing, i guess, that on the $5 table in the back of the strand in 2011 one can find characters that just happen to be incidentally deaf, everyone keep it moving, no grand points to be found here. and tc boyle is immensely pleasurable to read, no question. but he's better when he's asking bigger questions, a la drop city or world's end.

A love story where love at first sight turns deadly when Dana is charged for crimes she did not do (according to her). Will Bridger stand by her?

A good suspense novel. Very well-written.

A clever, offbeat thriller with many unique touches. Its only misstep was letting the bad guy get away at the end.
