wtf

-1 star for pacing
Melville struggled in his own novel to describe the granduer of "The Whale." Victor Hugo tackles a similar task, capturing the majesty and scope of architecture. He succeeds in passages understandably discarded as "long-winded." (I love them, but they try my patience.) As a fan of Les Miserables, I love that his dedication to exhaustive detail. The characters are ephemeral and the story is tragic, even awful at times. But Hugo's storytelling elevates it to great heights. The author feared the press would render architecture obsolete. Instead his work celebrates Paris, and it's people and immortalized both.

To be quite honest I was surprised how much I loved this book- it was so easy to read and all of the character developments and how emotional & layered it was.

I shouldn't have been surprised- this is Hugo we're talking about.

That feeling when you want to write a fanfiction about the Notre-Dame cathedral, but then you have to come up with a plot to make people read it, so you casually create one of the best stories in all of literature
