An interesting read – I enjoyed this, though not as much as Les Miserables. The characters were complex and interesting and the ending very powerful, but it didn't quite hold my attention as much as Les Miserables.

I enjoy well done descriptive prose but this was overblown, unnecessarily long with bizarre pointless tangents.
Another reviewer noted you could tell Hugo got paid by the word and this made me realise that the feeling I got reading the book was of an author desperately trying to hit a word count.

Just didn’t seem to be going anywhere and I wasn’t enjoying it
My own fault for reading the UNABRIDGED version...... alit of singing of songs and Latin.... alot of random Latin. You can tell Hugo was paid by the word. Alot of rattling off street names and listing of money that people have in their pockets. Think, "two dollar bills, and a five dollar bill. Then, of course, came a 20 dollar bill. Just one. Just one twenty dollar bill. The coins jangled. There were 4 quarters, ah round cold quarters! And just four of them"....
