i stuck with this only because it’s a classic. i found esther a very annoying protagonist for the first half of the book and nearly gave up several times. i did grow to empathize with her more by the end — only because i myself have a mental illness that would have landed me in an asylum back then too. reading this made me even more grateful for modern psychiatric meds!

i can see why this book would have been groundbreaking for its time. the commentary on gender and the expected life course for a young (middle-class, white) woman was frank and expressed a degree of disillusionment that i think many femme people still feel today.

despite knowing it’s a product of its time, i did struggle a lot with how much racism is embedded in the character, particularly after learning that this novel is essentially a nominally fictionalized version of plath’s own experiences.
