Life is busy and it only gets busier! What is it that makes you busy? Is it self imposed or a product of our design?

Are you busy because you desire the praise of others and making them smile? Does it stem from how much better you are at things or your desire to prove yourself? Is what keeps you working hard about the next big toy or trip? Or is it because you’ve planned poorly? Do you occupy your time with busyness because you wish to keep things under control and perfect? Does you busyness derive from how you want others to see you: prestigious or pitied? Or are you busy because you desire to see God glorified?

Our busyness is often a beacon of greater danger. It shows us the craggy rocks of ambition, and the deadly tempests of meaningless pursuits.

But God wants us busy for Him.

He wants our efforts focused on doing good, not looking good. He wants our minds sharpened by our pursuit of Christ. He want us humbled in our imperfect pursuit to advance His kingdom.

When we understand our worth as image bearers of Christ and find our identity in Him, our busyness becomes joy and our struggles with pleasing others evaporate like the vapors of steam poured out on a lava flow.

Kevin Deyoung's book is focused on you. This book works to help you find how can you reduce busyness while maintaining your commitments to God. He talks a lot on finding the areas you have been sinfully busy and replacing those with godliness.

One area he talks about that will surprise many readers is parenting. Parenting cranks up the your busyness - how do you deal with that?

Deyoung's book is well written and insightful. It's also pretty short, making it an easy read for busy people. I think you'll find the book helpful in learning how to best regulate your own busyness.

This book was a great primer to the importance of slowing down, sabbath, and rest, in a world where the pace of life is unattainable.

The first 75 pages of this book were not engaging but I kept reading because it was short. Chapter 7 (11 pages) about screen time and social media felt like the first chapter he finally had something to say. Chapter 8 on rhythm, not-so-much-routine, was a little stronger writing as well. Mostly I didn't connect with this book. Maybe part of my problem is that I think of busy as engaged in life, but I don't share the author's viewpoint which seems to be that busy always means overworked and/or over-stressed.

In a small book about a big subject, DeYoung discusses why people feel they are always busy. This isn't a "how-to" so much as an exploration of how we fall into busyness, a reminder of where and on whom we should focus, and hope of peace as we walk daily with Him. It's a practical book that I'll refer to often.

I only got through about 30 pages before I realized this book was religious. I tried to get past the mentions of church and whatnot, but he uses a lot of Bible verses and I don’t feel I will get much out of it.

The overt Christianity made this book not for me, but if you are Christian, it is probably a good fit.
