Really, this is a 3 star read for me. The world and characters are full of possibility, but it's clear that it will take more than one book for them to reach their full potential.
The extra star is for Feenix. I can't resist a pet gargoyle that's so ugly it's cute.

I didn't hate it but didn't love it either. The world building seems rushed and not fleshed out very well, the introduction of so many characters in book 1 left most of them wanting. Both things aren't deal breakers though, as the tale was entertaining enough.
Evalle's role as 'victim' grates on my nerves a bit though. I understand it's done to create conflict, but constantly being under the thumb of others (Sen, Brina, VIPER, etc) is rather annoying.

This one has been on my shelf for a while. I love Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love is going to be at the Barbara Vey Reader Appreciation Luncheon that I'm attending in April, so I thought it would be a good time to pick it up.
This book is full of interesting characters, including plenty of hot, alpha males. This is the first of a series with quite a bit of world-building, different types of beings with different powers and that sort of thing. If you are a fan of paranormals, I think you will like this. I would like to see where the series goes from here. And I adore Evalle's pet, Feenix.

Honestly, I thought I would love this based on the author alone (well, one of the authors: SK). I was wrong. Very wrong. The idea is interesting. The characters, not so much. To be honest, mainly the heroine. I am all for an independent, don't take no shit female. In addition, I understand her past reflects a lot on her actions in her present, but I just couldn't get myself to like Evalle. At all. I found myself forcing to read, and it was becoming a chore. My love for reading should never be a chore. I've had books that have been a struggle and managed to push through. This is not one of them. This will be a series by SK that I'm just going to act like doesn't exist.

I really wanted to enjoy this book but I couldn't because I felt the characterization and personalities of all the characters just didn't fit them. I couldn't feel any connection or emotion from the book (maybe except for the ending) and I didn't care for any of the characters. Kenyon felt like writing a more "adult" (if you know what I mean) Percy Jackson series but ended up failing. Relationships and how they were formed are questionable such as the introduction of Isak (added nothing to the plot in my opinion) and the camaraderie of Quinn, Tzader and Evalle. I just didn't get how they really became close friends, Kenyon needed more tips from J. K. Rowling on how to build friendships. The beginning really lacked focus and was all over the place as Kenyon tries to explain the mythology of Beladors, etc all that in medias res. She also has the habit of Dan Brown who just loves to... explain things instead of making them happen. It could have been a better book because the story's really promising but I guess the writing style just isn't for me.

I didnt like this book very much at first, but it grew on me. I think I will read the others. I liked the characters, and I want to see if Evalle can work through her issues with men, or if she will ever let anyone know she was raped as a kid.

Very good, by the way! Yeah, finished, it was really good! Wrapped up mostly everything, with a few questions that I hope are answered in later books!
*Second Read and Review July 6th 2012*
Loved it again! Very complex plot, and lots of questions for the next book, and loved Feenix! So cute! Can't wait to read Alterant!

Not as good as Ms Kenyon's Dark Hunter series, but still a really interesting read. Its a little slow to get into the story, but once you are in, its hard to get out.
