That was so fucking boring. Literally as interesting as watching wet paint dry.

I loved this novella - it's long enough to be called such - and I was pleasantly surprised by how profound and easy to read at the same time it was. I have read some other of Joyce's short stories for study purposes, and while that helped me have a deeper understanding of this text as well, I must say this was on a way higher level of enjoyability. Not only are the descriptions suggestive and able to bring the reader to another place and time, but the characters - the protagonist above them all - feel like real human beings, in all their facets, and with whom it's so easy to sympathize.

My mind is blown. The comfy, wintery atmosphere was just enchanting… I was hooked the whole way through, but the brilliance in The Dead was just how everything built onto itself. Perhaps an all-time favorite ending. I think I preferred A Painful Case though, don’t kill me Joyce purists.
