Much more than I expected

I expected a quick and shallow romance/ erotica, but this was a tad deeper and a bit more moving. I definitely enjoyed it and look forward to the next!

Strong character development: No

Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

It’s a draft, there’s no way it was given a developmental edit. I’m not sure there’s a single consistent plot point to be found. Like the alien women are horrible child abandoners, but also they are legally prevented from being parents and heavily encouraged to move on to a new partner soon after having a kid. They can only gain custody if the father dies and it’s unlikely any of them know it. Women aren’t safe to be alone with men, who outnumber them 200 to 1, but also men are super protective and would never allow harm to come to them.

I like the audiobook, though. The production quality is surprisingly good. I especially enjoyed the bird sounds in the outdoor scenes. And, yeah, a few of the characters toward the end of the story sound like muppets, but to be fair the gender ratio was stacked against the male narrator.

Rereading it again and i still love Grim and Lisa!
This has to be my favorite alien romance book ( thus shelving it as Sci-Fi). It is insta love and low angst story, but it is entertaining.

Grim is a sensational science fiction romance that takes us to the stars with a pure sweet love and learning to fight for those you love and defeating those enemies that seek to destroy everything your fighting for....

Grim is a book that I was in the mood for, and since it has been a while since I have picked up a science fiction romance, I just knew that this book was for me. I will say that I had no idea what I was really in for when I picked up this book but BOY this one thew me a curveball but one that I fell head over heels in love with. And such a sweet romance....I have definitely gotten a kick out of this author's writing style, so different from anything I have read before, definitely, soften and more tender than I was expecting.

Our story begins with our heroine, who is a widow after losing her husband and one that leaves her with two young girls to raise on her own. While leaving them with her babysitter, she goes to visit her late husband's grave and finds herself transported on an alien ship and kidnapped where they want mates. But there is one, who is scarred on the outside but has kind eyes and gives her an offer. He will go back for her children if she will join with him in a mating ceremony. Lisa will do anything to protect her daughters, so she agrees because there is something different about Grim from the others, a man so in need of affection and kindness.

Grim is the King of Luda, but because of his scars that he received when being attacked by eight men, no woman will have him....he is "unsuitable and bad goods" to the Tornian women. He knows that his life will be lonely. His people dealt with a plague that killed the majority of their women, and they are in desperate need of mates to have children with so their people don't die out. When they hear of this planet "earth" he was sent to find it and bring back a group of women for their most elite of warriors. Grim never expected that a woman would ever want to speak for him, but Lisa speaks to him in a way he has never been spoken to before and he is enthralled and when she accepts his proposal. And he becomes charmed by two little girls, who make him smile and laugh and he begins to learn what "love" is all about.
I heard the nurses talking once. They said it would be better for everyone if he just gave up. I asked Daddy what they meant, and he told me they were wrong. That every minute he had with Mommy and us was worth every second of pain he suffered. That there is no honor in quitting just because it is hard. So you're the Raptor, Grim, because you didn't quit when it got hard. You protect Mommy, us and Luda.

As Grim, Lisa and the two little girls Carly and Miki start a new life together, it's not all roses and daisies. There are dangers because other "males" find it unreasonable that Grim would be able to have Lisa and her daughters and will do anything to destroy what he has. There are enemies to the Tornian people, and only with Lisa fighting beside Grim and joining forces to do what is right, will they destroy the real villains and find peace.
You can’t have love and not at some time hurt. You can’t be happy and not have some sadness. It is called life, you have to live it. The good and the bad Grim

I honestly didn't want this book to end for a multiple array of reasons. I truly had a blast with this book and I fell in love with the world building that this author creates and I was definitely enthralled for sure. What is really pivotal is the relationship between Grim and Lisa. Grim has never known a kind touch from a woman or a kiss or even knew what real love could be like between a man and a woman. The Tornian culture is so vastly different from what Lisa knows and she begins to teach Grim what love is and there are so many poignant moments in this book that evoke an emotional response in the reader. The emotions are so vibrant in this book and I ended up just craving more!!

There are political plots, kidnapping and attacks, intense action yet the story is filled with sweet heartwarming moments between this family that makes you eager for more!! I can't wait to read more of this world.

Baaah.

I actually really liked this. The premise very unoriginal for scifi erotica. Species is dying because woman are scarce due to some virus. "Scifi erotica, we need women" So, the men go to find women that are compatible from other worlds. I've read several of these and expected to get a ho hum version of the same story. Although it can be good, they can be pretty bad too. This one was very good and it wasn't totally erotica, just more a scifi romance.

First you have to get over any editing issues. Or if you are listening, the monotone voice of the narrator. The audio is actually more of a graphic type audio as there is a woman and a man reading the female and male parts. When a action happens like a bang on the table, it'll be read and you'll hear a background noise. The is constant background noise though I stopped noticing except during the loud noises like the bangs or thunder. It doesn't happen often so doesn't really take away from the story but really more adds to it. Not the best narrators but the background sound is subtle and adds to place and surroundings. Still both the written book and the audible version have their slight issues.

After getting over the editing issues, then get ready for a bit of a simplistic writing style, he said, she said, type but not that bad. Once you start listening to the what is said in the short style, you start getting carried into the story. It didn't take too long as the story and characters were pretty compelling. This is a love at first sight, or first protection. I liked that it was because of protection instead of only sight. He was the only one that listened to her. Still she came to love very fast for a woman who had a pretty good marriage.

So Grim was scarred, both his face and vocal chords. In his world there are very few women and those are very picky. Scars denote an inability to protect oneself, so how could he protect a woman under his care. Women are pampered and set apart. Women hold much power but mainly it is because they are given choice in male partner and the ability to change partners if not satisfied. Virtually every man would have any woman since there are so few women. So they hold back affection, and manipulate through change of partners. Only perfect partners and warriors are picked. Grim knows he is not one of those.
Spoiler I never really got this as he is next in line to the Emperor, his brother. So his station only should have over looked any scarring and perceived inability to defend himself. I get that rumors were spread that he was weak, without regard to beating 8 armed warriors and winning during the battle that gave him the scars. Still I would think that his title alone would've given him status still, even with the scars and rumors. I over looked this.
So when one of the captured females claims that she wasn't a single female and that her family was left behind, her family being her children, he figures it might be his only chance at acquiring a mate. He is the only one willing to return to retrieve possible children.
SpoilerThe other men, one, don't believe that she has children as there was no male scent (her husband had died), and two, are not willing to take responsibility for another man's children. They don't realize that they might be female children. Only Grim agrees to do so. This immediately elevates Grim's stature as female children are so rare. He now has and mate and two female children both female. Suddenly he knows he must make arrangements in order to protect them.
This endears Grim to her and cements their relationship.

Grim and Lisa have a lot of culture misstep especially since women of the Tornians are so cold and distant. Lisa is nothing like what he is used to. Luckily even being outside of the normal culture, Lisa has a lot of sway being a female and she uses it to change the attitudes and understands of the men under Grim's orders. There is much political machinations to try to wrest control of Lisa and her girl's from Grim, and most you can see coming down the highway pretty easily. Still the relationship while getting to the end was good. And Lisa at the end, was like a lawyer in her defense of her position, very smart. I liked that the solution came from more than one person. It was a very good story for me in the end. I've already started the next one in the series.
