More like a 3.5/5.

I'm happy with the story, I really am. I think Neal Shusterman is a really good writer, and an excellent world-builder, which is very important in fantasy. It's not that I didn't like it, it's just that I long for more.

This book - this series, in fact - is about 2 young people who are put through extreme trials, that test not only their skills and wisdom but their sheer capacity to be human, their character, and their judgment. And yet I had to read 500 pages before they were even remotely together and mind you, there was very little development of their actual love in the previous books. It seems like it came out of nowhere- and although I know it did not, it still feels like it. In the story there is very little... well, love. I wish to see more of Rowan and Citra. I've heard that there is or will be the fourth book, and that makes me hopeful given the ending of this one. I can only hope that I won't have to just imagine their story from now on.

There were several exciting parts of the book that made me not want to put it down, which I enjoyed. I overall don’t have too many strong feelings about this, I think I liked the first two more. The ending was a little unsatisfying, it’s not the way I wanted their story to conclude - it certainly was a choice. Jericho’s character/identity and the way they were written felt super groundbreaking for me, it defined gender in a way that I’ve never seen and I loved it as someone who is fluid. Also, im not sure if it was my copy or just a bad editor, but there were a lot of distracting punctuation errors in this book.

What a disappointment...

I liked the first two books a lot, this one though I felt like it was slow and so boring. Even when the plot seemed to have a twist I don't have that curiosity that makes me ask myself "what will happen now?", it's all very flat.

The pov change are so annoying and there are way too many characters who take part in the narration, Citra and Rowan don't even seem like the protagonists.

The villain is embarrassing, Goddard seems like a petulant child.

I tried and tried to make myself like this book and it makes me so sad not being able to.
