I had high reviews but now...not so much
Despite the obvious trigger warnings and taboos, I do not regret picking up this book and reading it. It was spicy with characters that had depth, personality, and scars. They all needed some form of healing, finding themselves in the mess that is life. All while falling for each other. This book was attention-grabbing, giving all the good chills down the spine, and causing a few heartstrings to get pulled. It’s a great read and I definitely loved every second of it!
UPDATE:
Okay, after some rethinking now that I have fully digested this novel, I have to say that one of the biggest things that bothered me was how Tieran seemed to use the whole "my parents never showed me attention and neglected me" as a poor reason for why she accepted the sexual advances from Kaleb, Noah, and Jake. She was even oscillating between telling Kaleb to stop his aggressive advances without her consent and telling him to continue since she never experienced being the receiver of sexual attraction. Like, honey, you're getting sexually assaulted and contemplating if you enjoy it or not! This is not cool! No matter how neglected you've grown to be, accepting being groped and violated by someone is not the wave! And the fact that they end up together... I don't know. To forget such a terrifying experience and the fact that he wrote on your forehead in childish anger and jealousy because you were involved with his father, Jake, just doesn't sit right with me.
Then there's Noah who also gave me a slight ick when it came to him trying to intimidate Tiernan to come over to him - trying to pull the whole dominant male facade - and then pulling her into his lap when she wouldn't do as he said. Even though he was seemingly drunk, I definitely gave him a major side eye for his rapey behavior as he didn't wanna take "no" for an answer. And the way he was practically itching to have his time with Tiernan and be able to have sex with her was a bit pathetic and - now that I really think about it - predatory considering the fact that it seemed like he was waiting his turn when he was fully aware she was involved with his dad. But, playing Devil's advocate, Tiernan wasn't really helping in the sense that she definitely seemed to play with his emotions when it came to them being alone and her encouraging/entertaining his sexual advances. You can't say that you don't want you two's relationship to change but then turn around and egg him on when he expresses his lust for you. It's either one or the other!
Now, regarding Jake, I don't see how he ended up with Mirai. Personally, I would have not been comfortable in knowing that he had a sexual relationship with the kid that I practically raised. So, yeah, now that I think back to this book with a clearer mind, I can definitely see its flaws regarding the dysfunctionality of these characters' relationships and truly think that there was some romanticized toxicity in this book. I still very much enjoyed the healing aspect of this reading and how they all came to rediscover themselves. But, overall, I am lowering my rating on this book and now giving it 3.4 stars, which would be just 3 stars when rounded.
