Pure journalism. No argument being made. Just an exploration of the queer-Christian experience in America. If you love hearing others' life stories, this is for you.

I loved this book. Jeff Chu is intelligent, articulate, compassionate and gracious. I've heard him speak twice - lets just say both laughing and crying were involved. Chu spent a year visiting people and churches all across the country who were, in some way, dealing with the gay folk in their community. From Westboro Baptist church (whose worship involves marching with signs saying 'God Hates Fags') to Metropolitan Community Church (started in the 1970s with the express purpose of serving the gay community) and everything in-between, Chu spent time getting to know both leaders and regular folk. He interviewed gay Christians who have chosen celibacy and those who have married their partners. Chu seems to find the good in everybody - even within disagreement. Chu's pilgrimage was both intellectual and personal. His thoughtful book successfully documents both journeys.

A very thoughtful and important book. These stories are varied and meet us where we are. Most of all, they show a God who is big enough to love us where and as we are.

Important book

At times hard to read, this book leaves me feeling angry, sad, frustrated, hopeful, encouraged, discouraged... obviously emotional. A full-spectrum journey gives a 360 degree view of the American church and her complicated relationship with gay Christians. I’ll be pondering for a while. Jeff Chu offers a full picture of what it is like for the outsiders among us... may we love like Jesus.

I so very much appreciate Jeff Chu’s pilgrimage. While it may have been his journey searching for what communities of faith have to say about God’s thoughts on his sexuality, this Christian ally (and many others, I would imagine) benefit from what he discovered. If you are an ally or a queer/gay Christian searching for what God has to say about LGBTQ people, I think you’ll find it hidden in Chu’s conclusion. God’s love and grace for us all is so deep and so wide and so small and so personal and so important...and so worth lavishly and recklessly sharing with others.
