Honestly pretty great! I am a big Girls Generation fan and they are the group that got me into K POP and idol culture. It was nice to get a bit of (what is probably) Jessica’s experience in the industry through the character of Rachel. Can’t wait to read the sequel which I already have!
It was a fun book but read like a typical YA contemporary. I love Jessica and I was really looking forward to this but it was very average, and I probably felt this way because I don’t care for YA contemporaries that much.

tw : verbal and physical abuse; bullying; racism; sexism; fat-shaming; dieting; body-shaming; child abuse
You should know that since I have known K-Pop; I fell totally in love with Jessica; and I have been following her ever since !
So I admit that I was waiting for this book very impatiently, and my expectations were very high. In the end, I must say that I was slightly "disappointed"; because I expected more; simply.
I liked that we talked about how so much horrible, toxic things in k-pop are; but not that, in the whole country. And I would go so far as to say that it also affects the world; but that's another subject.
And at the same time, I didn't like it because it wasn't enough. I expected to read a book that would make war on all of this a bit, and that is not what I got.
Despite that, it's still a nice story (if I may say so); and I was pleasantly surprised by the pen !
I recommend it, but only if you are comfortable enough with the tw mentioned above.

Jessica spilled some scorching hot tea on being in the kpop industry including the gender inequality and backstabbings, but the writing is very basic with romance that I couldn't root for. Not when the male lead superstar Jason is an inconsiderate asshole and Rachel is still a trainee and teenager in high school, which contributed to the power imbalance that felt wrong. It'd be great if it was a cautionary tale, but their relationship conflicts were rectified too fast that they didn't feel genuine.
I'm curious for more gossip behind the idol world, but I'm still debating whether I should pick up its sequel Bright.

This K-pop hopeful is a Korean-American girl relocated to Seoul for her mom's job. 17-year-old Rachel has been in a trainee program since she was 11, and is anxious to make her debut--as is her backstabbing rival, Mina. There are dirty tricks, a boy, a sister, and a neglected best friend in this enjoyable quick read, though the vague ending is a little frustrating.
Imagine giving up everything you know in search of a dream only to discover the shine of that dream is really made up of sweat, tears, and deceit. Welcome to the world of Korean K-Pop! Follow 17 year old Korean American Rachel Kim as she trains toward her dream of being a star with DB Entertainment—one of Seoul’s largest K-pop labels.
This book is everything K-Pop dreams are made of--crushes, competition, and drama. The world building is phenomenal--luxe and over-the-top but completely believable. I felt like I was right there with Rachel, feeling the longing to succeed.

This book should come with a massive trigger warning for anyone struggle with body image and eating disorders. Weight, dieting, and excessive exercise are mentioned a lot.
This book definitely had potential. It was very eye opening for someone who doesn’t know a lot about KPop. I just wished the storylines and some characters were fleshed out more. The Jason/Rachel storyline was missing chemistry in my opinion and the twist at the end didn’t feel that powerful. She also does bring up some very important topics about sexism in the industry. But I felt like it could have been written to be more powerful
It’s a cute book overall and I can’t wait to read what she has in the future.
