2.5 stars rounded up. It took me a good 100 pages to be interested in this story. I found the characters to be mainly unlikable and quite annoying, they are high schoolers after all. It’s much darker than I anticipated and I felt like it was a 100 pages too long but it pulled me in enough to want to know what happened in the end.
This book was a fever dream and I'm hear for it.
Uhm....what did I just read?? I was expecting a Friday night lights feel with some mystery....what I got was a slight football background, with mystery, some weird/creepy/scary Stephen King type crap and a whole lot of crazy. I don't even know how to process everything. I need a minute...

The Bright Lands was THE book that I had highly anticipated this year, after so many of my book friends recommended it to me. After reading more and more of the same storyline and plot when it comes to thrillers, this was such a breath of fresh air with this original debut!
John Fram has created such dynamic characters and I loved the slow build to find out what was going on in this small Texas town, but felt like the end was a rush and it all came flooding in at once.

I enjoyed this story except for a few issues. First, there were so many characters; it was a challenge to keep them all straight during the story- multiple fathers, brothers, cops, teammates, coaches, etc. Next, the ending, or at least the part at the Bright Lands, was a bit too surreal for me. Lastly, Clark's last phone call at the very end was such a letdown. Was it meant to be a cliffhanger; I can't imagine, so why not provide closure on such an important thread throughout the story? To end on a positive note: the cover is beautiful.
Tense, tough, unsentimental horror novel dealing with the cost of shame. Perfect picture of the rot inside certain small towns only let down by the endless cast of characters who become hard to follow in parts, but overall well worth a read
This book is way too long, needed editing & maybe fewer POV characters, the supernatural element at the end sort of made no sense & could easily be done away with, & it was done no favors by being my subway book, meaning I read it sort of piecemeal with long weekend hiatuses. However, there was something very compelling in the characters and the mystery, even though I think that was unnecessarily convoluted, too. I have lots of criticisms, but ultimately quite liked it.

Imagine if Friday Night Lights and Tremors had a gay love child and you'd have this story.
This story started out gang busters but then at the conclusion...which went on forever and a day, was just too over the top.
It was an okay read. I wouldn't recommend it to any friends but I didnt stop reading it, so there's that.
