This book is a real page-turner. Louise is likable but gets her life in a hot mess. David and Adele are tough to figure out. I wasn’t sure was coming next and couldn’t wait to find out. All the loose ends are tied up nicely at the end. I wavered between 4 and 5 stars, but really - I don’t know what could make it better. Sure there’s an unrealistic element, but it’s still a great book.

“There’s no right and wrong with feelings. There is only what there is.”
This quote from the book might very well describe how I feel about this book. I really wanted to love this book, not just like. There is a lot of hype around the Netflix series of the same name, people rushing to read the book before watching the show. And then, it was voted in my book club for March’s read along. I dont really read thrillers but when I do, I usually like them. This was not the case with this book.
I don’t know where to begin. Sigh. Okay, so let me start by saying that the two protagonists of the book Louise and Adele seemed almost the same to me. Why am I saying that? Was it something to do with the description of their clothes or appearance? No. It was the way the two pov’s were written. To me, it felt like they were the exact same person, like the author couldn’t create two distinct voices for Louise and Adele. It was so confusing in the beginning. It also felt flat. I don;t know if that;s what the author was trying to get through, the monotony of their lives, being utterly bored with their routines and what not. But even as things were in motion, things were happening and hearts should be flattering, all that it was conveyed was a flatness. Its like your heart is beating and that steady up and down line on the monitor suddenly goes flat. This is how it felt. Almost for the entirety of the book.
Furthermore, the setting was completely unrealistic. I mean I do live in London but what was described, the home of Adele for example. It was not realistic. This is a big turn off for me. This happens in quite a lot of books that are set in London. The authors describe homes that you are most likely to find in the States and not in gloomy London. The entire premise of the book seemed unrealistic and I do not mean the paranormal side of it. I mean the relationship between the two women, the games the wife is playing. Not even psychopaths are that manipulative and clever. It just didn’t feel right when I was reading it.
It is really rare for me to DNF a book and especially at 80% that I dnf’ed this one. I really wanted to finish it but I just couldn’t get in it. It was a big disappointment even though I wasn’t expecting anything.
