I LOOOVED this book. My favorite part of the book was that the author managed to write incredibly flawed characters, but still make them lovable and easy to empathize with. It wasn’t one of those times where you were mad at the characters for their decisions, instead, your heart was breaking as you watched them deal with the consequences of their actions. I also loved the historical aspect of this novel- would give it 6 stars if I could.
It was really refreshing that most of the betrayal and unfaithful behavior was The woman's doing and from the female perspective. It's often limited to just men who get the bad rap.
So good. A story of family, regret, and love. Life and death. Intertwining characters but multiple perspectives on the same relationships makes the character development fantastic. I felt like I was living alongside of them during their stories. This was a page-turner for me and I thoroughly enjoyed reading every minute of it, even the parts that made me cry and/or were surprising twists.

This one had me immersed in French wine country during WW2. The characters felt like they could be real people, because their emotional responses and fears were portrayed well. Did they make great decisions? Absolutely not. But I think it was a good portrayal of humanity. Broken and flawed people who were scared or unaware trying to figure out their lives during a huge war. Loved it.

Another great book from Kristin Harmel!
I will be honest though.... this book sort of dragged for me. It did not immediately draw me in. I wasn't a fan of the characters - I found them all to be annoying. Definitely not a fan of theinfidelity trope that made its way into this story. I found most of this story to be a bit lackluster.
When I read historical fiction books that include the French Resistance, I expect big things. I enjoy the secrets and hiding and badass people that were part of the Resistance. I like reading about the things they did to help the fight against Germany. While this book did include some bits and pieces of that, I feel like it focused more on the character relationships instead of the actual historical events.
Now, the redeeming part of this book was the ending. My goodness, what an ending! I was literally sitting there with my mouth hanging open. I'm so happy with the ending and how we got closure for everybody.
This story flips between the past with Ines and Celine, and the present with Liv. Funny enough, I found Liv's present day chapters to be the most interesting. So many secrets were revealed in her chapters, and I love how the author laid out the story.
Overall, amazing book. Not my favorite historical fiction ever, but the ending makes it worth it. If you enjoy more character driven books and don't mind if the focus is on characters more than the historical events, pick this one up!
