The more you read the book, the more you learn cause it keeps changing. Holden Caulfield is such a well developed character you end up knowing so personally by the end. There’s so much that is conveyed in not a very long book and that’s incredible.

I really liked it! I loved Holden's voice throughout this, and the conversational style meant Salinger didn't waste time describing irrelevant things. Just got right into it.

I was lead to believe that this book sucks and nobody should read it. I see now that the modern book culture has influenced me again. I really enjoyed this story, and the sexism, racism and homophobia are incredibly tame for a book written in 1951. I don't know Salinger's personal opinions, but the decision to make the protagonist narrate the story made me take everything he said with a grain of salt. An unreliable narrator, as they say. Holden is very unlikeable which was refreshing. It feels like protagonists are never unlikeable or bad anymore, at least not without some sort of redemption arc. Spoiler: He doesn't get one. He just sucks. And he is allowed to exist like that. We get to see the world through his whiny teenage lense. It's been a while since I've been in the mood to pick up a book and keep reading. Don't believe all you hear. Read and make up your own conclusions. Holden is very whiny though, I discovered that to be true.
