Honestly, kind of disappointing compared to how good the rest of the series is. My two main complaints with this one are: (a) I didn't find Marat to be a particularly compelling villain. At first he was interesting, because he actually had a reasonably noble goal, and his complaints against the Sphinx had some legitimacy. But then he just turned into a power hungry despot (which I guess he was all along). He became too one-dimensional. (b) The dialog got a little too quippy for my liking. It's hard to take a dramatic fight scene seriously when the characters are cracking one-liners every other paragraph. I can't believe the characters are actually in danger when none of them are acting like it.

I loved the whole series, but for me the last volume was the “worst”. It wasn't bad at all, of course, I just didn't think it was as great as the other volumes. The ending was also quite unsatisfactory for me, unfortunately. The best thing about the book for me were the characters and their relationships, as well as the humor. I have to say that it was a little less than in the other books. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book in general and the writing style is sooo beautiful!

And so it all ends. Kind of mixed feelings on how it all wrapped up, to be honest. Overall, it's still a great read.

That didn’t go where I expected but I throughly enjoyed the adventure.

I'm not sure what it was about this one, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the earlier books and that's strange because I usually like the last book in a series (is this the last?) better than the others. I was often confused while listening. Everything was moving so fast, constant action. So much so that when the characters "split" in the end I didn't know who went where with whom. The technical aspects were very confusing, and I don't understand why Marya was so angry with Senlin. Also it seemed strange to have such a long beginning with only Adam.

Still the writing was great, the characters were great, it just kind of was a big mess of great things that didn't really work for me. I'm giving the book 3 stars because I'm assuming some of my confusion is from missing things while I was listening and doing something else at the same time.

What an absolute let-down to what was such a fantastic and promising series. I was enthralled by the first three books - so much so that I couldn't even wait for the library copy to be available for this book and instead bought it outright. It almost defies belief how much the series took a nosedive in this final installement. The pacing is completely thrown off, loose ends are tied up too quickly and many are left to fester, and the whatever genre the series was gets chewed up and spat out into something completely different and undefined. Although sold as an "ending", it's extremely unsatisfactory and doesn't fit in with the character development at all. I'm so sad about this ending, and wish I could "unread" it and just imagine my own ending.
