Okay, I'm ready to give a longer review. I loved this series genuinely, I found the approach so interesting and internal. I think I'm not used to reading characters come to realizations all on their own without external events directly spurring them on, in the sense that there were stretches of just deep introspection, reflection, contemplation, analysis of the self and other... and since (for certain characters) there are periods of waiting, longing, biding time, and deciding, it was just very humane to see someone change themselves to accord to the sense the world is NOT making around them. I do think some ends were left quite loose, and that the basis for the conflicts and structures quite simplified, but I think the joy and wonder of the series is in the internal revelations everyone goes through and how they figure their lives out in this crazy, cruel, ridiculous world. I actually quite appreciated the ending although it seems shrouded in mystery and a sense of helplessness but it felt like quite enough. Let them figure the rest out! I also think Bancroft must have had so much fun thinking up ways to have each ringdom sound wry and hilarious and I do love seeing authors have fun. The emphasis on knowledge and humility as being not dichotomous but necessarily intertwined was quite clever and familiar to ME! THANK YOU for this beautiful journey, loved it.

My least favorite of the series, which i loved! I just found this way too long and got less and less intrigued in the protagonist arc vs that of side characters

Very good series. The ending felt like the author wrote himself into a corner and didn't know how to end it, and so drew on the increasingly popular technique of leaving several strings open-ended for the reader to wonder about

That, that can't be the end, right???

I adore this series. I never ever wanted it to end. And I certainly didn’t want it to end…like that. I felt cut off from my favorite characters at the end, but I also think there is possibility for a companion series (or 2…or 3, as long as Byron and Iren get one each). Additionally, some of the largest mysteries from the rest of the series were just brushed off. “Oh, that was weird that that door we’ve been talking about for 3 books just….doesn’t actually open.” I don’t know. I was certain this was going to be a five star read and it just wasn’t. Close, though!
