Joshua Moehling is a new author to me, but this book is the second book in the Ben Packard series. I was a little worried in the beginning that I would be disconnected from the book and the first one, but that was the furthest from the truth. This author made sure you weren't left out at any part.
Ben Packard has been named acting sheriff of Sandy Lake and he has to head up the investigation into a murder. He arrives on the scene and nothing looks right. In the midst of the investigation, the community board has decided that the town needs a permanent elected Sheriff, so elections are underway. Packard goes back and forth about whether to run and then is convinced to enter the contest.
Through twists and turns, the investigation gets more confusing when another body turns up. The Gherlick family holds a lot of secrets, and they all come to light with these two murders in a small town.
Moehling makes you not want to put this one down and now makes me want to read the first book. Where the Dead Sleep comes out August 15, 2023, so preorder your copy NOW!

I really enjoyed this and now feel extra dumb for not already reading And There He Kept Her. Suffice it to say, this works quite well as a standalone if you've not read the first book in the Ben Packard series.
Love Ben as a character and love the small town Minnesota setting with all of the gossip and intrigue you'd expect -- the dead guy married his ex-wife's SISTER?!? - scandalous!
Excited to see what happens next for Packard!
* thanks to Poisoned Pen for the NetGalley review copy! WHERE THE DEAD SLEEP published in August 2023 (whoops), and I ended up listening to a library copy.

A very well written police procedural about a murder that is much more confusing that it looks at the onset. Acting Sheriff Ben Packard is going to have to delve into this small town many twisty secrets if he's going to find out who actually shot Bill Sandersen. It seems like just a robbery gone wrong, but the details aren't adding up and Packard is going to have to dig through toxic relationships, family secrets, and small town drama if he's going to find out who caused Bill's death that night.
I didn't realize that until a bit into the book that it was actually a sequel, and while I'm sure I would have enjoyed small details even more having read the first, this book is also excellent on it's own. I had no trouble quickly getting to know both Ben Packard and the small town he lives in.
The cliff hanger was excellent and I went from never having heard of this author to ravenously waiting for him to write the third book!
TW: Murder, adultery, toxic family relationships, alcoholism

Loved this book!
This is the second in a series with Det. Packard as the lead, but was written well enough that this could be a stand-alone. I am, however, planning to read the first one!
Packard is a fantastic main character who I rooted for during the entire novel and sheriff’s race. The antagonists (there were several unlikeable characters) were well written and provided just enough drama to keep me engaged and wanting more.
This novel is two main story lines running throughout it - one storyline was kept open at the end, I assume to set up the next in the series., which I am eagerly awaiting!
Overall, really loved Packard, the writing style, plot line and twists, and can’t wait to read more!

Really enjoyed this one! Pace is a bit different from the first book, still with multiple POVs but mainly through Packard.
The author has a way of weaving the psychology of the characters into the crime and the mystery. While in the last book, the killer was revealed but it was the chase (or at which point the killer and the pursuer eventually met) that was the structure of the plot. In this one, the potential suspect(s) were being hinted until the true killer was revealed. However, was the mastermind the killer or…something else? The author used psychology to essentially tricked the killer to do the deed. That’s the intriguing part.
PLUS, what I really liked about this one was the more attention given to the background arc of Packard’s story - his missing brother, Nick. A lot of hints were dropped and I know I am totally looking forward to the next book because Nick’s story intrigued me since the first book.
