Was not interested in the story or the characters.

I was invested in the main character Deputy Packard and grew very disinterested in figuring out who killed Bill. It was a tangled web of one family filled with trash women. We went over the hill and thru the woods to get an "almost got away with it, if it weren't for that pesky meddling (insert name)" The story unfolded quickly and then just dropped on the doorstep and then the let down of a fixed election and a cliff hanger. Overall, I just felt meh about it though it was a page turner when I got to end I just felt like I turned and turned for this. But I did enjoy the author's writing style it kept me engaged, I felt like I could picture all of the characters and locations.

Great book. More of a character study than a mystery, but the characters are all very likeable.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for allowing me to receive an ARC of this book. This is the second book in the Detective Ben Packard series. This book has everything a good thriller has family drama, infidelity, gambling, politics and of course, murder. Det. Packard is called out bright and early on Sunday morning of Labor Day weekend to investigate the murder of Bill Sandersen. During his investigation, he learns that there are many people who dislike Bill including his wife and ex-wife, who just happened to be sisters! This book had me guessing until the very end. I liked how the author added in details of the investigation that may or may not be related to Bill's murder. The ending was perfect and left two mysteries open for additional books in the series. I am curious about Mr. Jim Henkel who is a science fiction writer mentioned in both books of the series. He has not been involved in the action but I hope the writer includes him in the next book. This is a splentacular read and I highly recommend!

I just couldn't connect with anything -- plot, characters, dialogue, setting. Things didn't work for me. It wasn't badly written, but it never engaged me and was a chore to finish.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
