Love love LOVE this book! The characters were so well developed and had such growth throughout the story. That twist was great. Very *Megamind* vibes.

This book started off so wholesome! For the first time in a while, I picked up a book because I thought the story was cute.

It started off so well, and I really thought it would be a five-star read. I was expecting a young adult book, but most of the time it felt more like a middle-grade book. There is nothing wrong with those kinds of books, but if I had known that before I started reading it, I would have started it with a different mindset.

This book is filled with action, plot twists, and character development. I loved the world-building and the characters in this book!

I loved how subversive and original the plot and story is. I mean yes it draws parallels to stereotype superhero plots like the boys. But this was still very fresh. The only thing I absolutely hated was how ruthless the father and sister were, maybe ruthless is over stating it but they were not like empathetic or willing to even hear our FMC Jenna out. There were some plot twists I instantly knew, but there were even more that I wouldn’t have guessed. I loved Joy, and the MMC Blaze. BLAZE IS SO GOLDEN RETRIEVER VICTIM OF CIRCUMSTANCE GOOD GUY. Overall the story seamlessly plots an original fresh take in a world crumbling under superhero fatigue, it successfully recenters the story, and weaves in themes of equality, empathy, and the radicalization of individuals. I cant wait for the next installment, of what I hope will be an up and coming series.

"The Love Interest" is what would happen if "The Boys" and "The Incredibles" had a ya baby. Hi baby!
My highest expectation when I picked up this book was being able to finish it because I've been in a kind of reading slump but I only needed a few pages to know that finishing it wouldn't be a problem.
I enjoyed this book for giving us such a unique point of view from Jenna a black sporty girl. I only wish the author went harder on what it meant for these two young people of colour being given these "wonderful" roles by society only so they could be either torn down if they didn't entertain them enough or sacrificed for the greater good. I also really loved how the villain was not cartoonishly evil, just willing to do whatever he had to get his way. If Jenna had been willing to go along, he would have been happy to take her under his wing which is a more recognizable and scary evil because it's the evil we have to deal with every day with the politician that smiles while destroying people's future for profit and fame or the famous artist that uses their position to steal from others and is celebrated for it.
I'm looking forward to seeing what Helen will come up with next because she gave us an original story with an interesting point of view and social commentary and I can't wait to see what she does once she has some more experience under her belt
Thank you to Bloomsbury and Yalc for this arc.
