~ the wallflower wager: 5/5 ~
plz i loved this book sm it was so cute and i was tearing up at the end just cause of how good these two were together omg. i loved sm abt it gabriel n penny looked like complete opposites and seeing them come together was so good. i love how in control penny was and just how unapologetically herself she was!!! i fucking loved how babe completely respected that of her too. i love how odd she was it was just so good. there was a fair bit of smut i wasnt very into those scenes but also i was just not in the mood uk. i also loved seeing the rest of the gang in these sm seeing ash n chase be besties was literally the best thing ever. and seeing them have dumb arguments was so cute n then seeing them team up against game plz i loved it all. i loved the girl group too they literally just get better w ever book i cant wait for nicola’s book man. plz this was just so good i feel so giddy finishing this book. it does have darker points tho so make sure to look up tws!! overall tho i loved this i love these characters a 5/5 for meeee

The Wallflower Wager was, in my opinion, the most heartbreaking installment in the Girl Meets Dukeseries.

I adored Lady Penelope Campion’s character, she was so very kind and pure of heart even while keeping such a devastating childhood secret.* She loved Gabriel wholeheartedly and without reservations even when he did not see himself as worthy of her love.

Gabriel didn’t believe he was good enough for Penny even though he was the first person who made her feel safe, protected, and loved. Against all of his intentions, he could not help but fall to her for her charm and fall hard. Penny taught him to love; love her, love her animals, and love himself.

Gabriel was willing to kill for Penny and honestly I wish she would have allowed him to kill the villain; it made me sick to my stomach that he didn’t die in the end.

However, I did love the fact that Penny reclaimed her power over her own life. She chose happiness and alongside Gabriel she found her own happy ending.

It was nice to catch up with all of the other couples from the series and although it has been literally years, I have not given up hope of one day reading Nicola’s story.

*
childhood sexual abuse, non-graphic, mild mentions

I just loved the way the two really matched and seeing the couples of the series all interact was so entertaining. Ash and Chase were hilarious. Gabe is the classic ~reformed bad boy~ n I loved every second of it.

I liked the dynamic between Penny and Gabe, especially how Penny knows what she wants and is willing to go after it (him). However, the entire plot/premise of the book was just not something I vibed with that much.

this my favourite so far because i love penny with all of my being. i laughed out loud so many times i lost count. i genuinely read this book in like 3 or 4 hours bc i couldn't stop. i swear i just never had as much fun with a book than with the wallflower wager.

penny and her farm animals plus parrot plus otter had me smiling the entire time. i just love how she's unabashedly herself.

around the end the book changes tones a bit, exploring themes such as pedophilia, sexual trauma, trauma surrounding living in poverty and in the streets, and child abandonment. it is not exactly heavy, i think the author did a good job of balancing the serious and the light-hearted. her comedy timing was perfect. there were serious things happening but then someone would say just the right thing to break the tension and lighten the mood again. like there would be a life and death situation but you didnt have the time to be tense about it bc in the middle of it ash and chase found time to bicker about the most ridiculous things, you couldn't help but laugh at their absurdity.

the love interest was not what i expected, but i liked him. specially his interactions with ash and chase had me absolutely losing it. plus he telling himself and penny that they can't happen and he can't kiss her only to kiss her every time they meet bc the sexual tension is just that big and he can't resist her. chef's kiss
