I accidentally purchased this book while looking for new reads on my kindle. I figured since I bought it, I might as well read it. The author could use a crash course in several areas: mansplaining, pubescent sexism, and physics. It was embarrassingly formulaic, and the unneeded romantic interest (seriously?) was eye-rolling.
This is a review of the audible version. The narrator did an excellent job with the pacing and voicing.
There were lots of great parts to this plot. I loved all the action scenes. I enjoyed the discovery scenes with the dolphins and the mystery under the sea. The situation at the Antarctic was mesmerising.
Unfortunately, I can't say I loved all of it.
The dolphins came across as dogs. Complete with their fascination with food and kids. Going so far as to wag their tails and run around in excited circles.
Last, but not least, the bad guy was pretty hard to swallow. An official going directly against the president's orders and having access to nuclear weapons without codes needed. Nah, I won't even try to believe that one else I'll have nightmares.
The action and imminent disasters kept me listening to the very end.

Spoiler
These were the most unbelievable (as in "not" believable) aliens I've ever read about. They called themselves human and spoke English in spite of being from a different planet. They looked and acted just like us. The physical aspect was briefly explained, but the rest of it was assumed. The alien we had most contact with might as well have been a paper doll for all the personality he had.The dolphins came across as dogs. Complete with their fascination with food and kids. Amazing!!
I would highly recommend this book! It was a huge page-turner - I could not put it down!! I would recommend it to everyone who likes sci-fi, and even if you don't think you like sci-fi, you're going to enjoy everything, cover to cover, of this book.

Breakthrough is essentially one of those cheesy SyFy original movies in book form. Some of the characters are a little lacking in depth, the plotline borders on absurd (and occasionally branches out into bonafide WTF territory), but it's a fun read and has some cool moments. I enjoyed the dolphins and the scenes in the Arctic. When I reached the end and realized that I was being set up for a sequel, I groaned... but god knows, if I watched Sharknado 2-4, I'm going to have to follow up on THIS.
I am absolutely loving this series. The characters are solid, the premise is enthralling, and the execution is excellent. I enjoyed the pacing and felt that I could see about half of the "twists" - which is pretty on par for a delightful book for me, as I prefer my plot twists to be believable enough to be solved but couched in enough mystery to keep me interested. My only disappointment is that I believe that there are certain narrative gaps and a repetitive adverb issue that I would have expected an editor to catch before going to print.
It is an interesting special ops book but there are some plot holes that did not seem explainable. There is a heavy political over tones in this book.
One of the first rules of sci-fi & thriller writing is that you should have a passing knowledge of what you're writing about. Do a little research.
I read the first few pages, and quit in disgust.
GPS in submerged submarines. Incorrect slang (sonar technicians are /not/ called ping jockeys). Magnetic fields affecting GPS signals, in submerged submarines that can't use GPS anyway.
I'm /very/ fortunate that Mr. Grumley chose to make this book available for free through one of the recommended book emails. I'd have been annoyed if I'd spent even $0.99 on this.
There are hundreds of thousands of better books. Don't waste your time on this author.

Entertaining, though a stretch for "fiction." Decided to start the sequel "Leap."

I've had this on my shelves for years! Finally I picked it up because I was in the mood for something different, and there were dolphins on the cover. I can't believe I waited this long to pick this book up! It was so good. I love the dolphins, Sally and Dirk. Their personalities really shined through. They weren't in it as much as I'd hoped, but I'm crossing my fingers that they'll be in it more in the coming books. The only reason this book isn't flawless for me is the structuring of the book and the crazy amount of technical talk. It spent a lot of time telling and not showing. Regardless, I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to jump into book 2!
Here's why I loved this book. It was unlikely anything I've read before. The plot was a mix of science fiction with non-stop action that spans across the globe. It has dolphins (that talk) as characters!!! I love those dolphins so much. The human characters were not bad either. The best moments were seeing the human and animal connection.
The over arching plot wrapped up pretty nicely, with heartbreak and then mystery. I would definitely read the next books in the series.
